FORMULA STUDENT

Formula Student is an annual event held after the Grand Prix at Silverstone Race Circuit. The event involves numerous teams of Universities from across the globe, all competing against one another to build, test a successful racing car.

We have quite a history with Formula Student, having covered the event since 2014. We started out as a 3 person offline shoot-edit team, which progressed to a 10 person team with live-streaming capability by FS 2016.

This year, due to covid restrictions, there were many less teams participating in the event – just 30 teams from around the UK, compared to 110 at FS 2019.

FS21 was an exciting event for us for numerous reasons, one being that we had by far the biggest crew – 21 individuals – deployed on this job. These ranged from truck drivers, riggers, technical directors, offline shoot-edit teams, cameramen, unit managers, networking engineers, VT playback, audio specialists, graphic designers – the list goes on!

Another exciting factor in this years’ event was the use of our Vislink Herocast GoPro equipment. This enabled us to wirelessly broadcast, for the very first time, a POV perspective of a Formula Student car going around a track from a GoPro. This had everyone incredibly excited, including the event commentators.

We certainly were not short of other cameras this year either. Our line-up included a Tower Camera, two Sony 2500 camera channels, a Sony Z450 RF Camera, Panasonic UE70 & UE100 PTZ camera and the combination of a gimbal operated Sony A7S III and Sony FS7 for the offline shoot edit team – we were well armed!

OB Van Live Broadcast Formula Student

The majority of our team were based on the famous ‘Copse Corner’ inside a sizable outside broadcast vehicle, supplied by our friends at Pivot Productions.

We also had an edit station based on the second floor of the Race Control tower, with a two person shoot-edit team who would alternate between material gathering & editing.
